Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe
by Greg Epstein
Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe In Good Without God, Greg Epstein presents another, more balanced and inclusive response: Humanism. With a focus on the positive, he highlights humanity's potential for goodness and the ways in which Humanists lead lives of purpose and compassion. Humanism can offer the sense of community we want and often need in good times and bad, as we celebrate marriages and the birth of our children, and as we care for those who are elderly or sick. In short, Humanism teaches us that we can lead good and moral lives without supernaturalism, without higher powers . . . without God.

The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason
by Victor J. Stenger
The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason In this new book, Victor J. Stenger, whose God: The Failed Hypothesis was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007, reviews and expands upon the principles of New Atheism and answers many of its critics. He demonstrates in detail that naturalism--the view that all of reality is reducible to matter and nothing else--is sufficient to explain everything we observe in the universe, from the most distant galaxies to the inner workings of the brain that result in the phenomenon of mind.

Secularism on the Rise in UK
Written by AAI Publicity
Wednesday, 27 January 2010

New research from the National Center for Social Research (UK) paints a promising picture of rising secularism in Britain.

The survey of more than 4,000 people across Britain found that the number of people describing themselves as Christian has dropped in the last 25 years from 66 percent to 50 percent.

The national center said most of that drop was due to defections from the Church of England, with only 23 percent of those surveyed describing themselves as Anglican today in comparison to 40 percent of the population in 1983.

The number of Britons saying that they do not belong to any particular faith rose from 31 percent in 1983 to 43 percent today.

Labor Rights Defeated in UK by Religious Forces
Written by AAI Publicity
Wednesday, 27 January 2010

London - The House of Lords this week passed an amendment removing changes to a law that would have brought religious groups in line with all other UK employers in adhering to equality employment laws that forbid hiring discrimation based on race, gender, or religion.

Existing UK law provides an exemption for all groups recognized as "religious" to these laws, allowing them to discriminate in hiring based on the candidate's declared religious belief regardless of the job being filled.  The UK government was considering a new law that, among other things, would restrict that exemption solely to ministers and other positions that wholly or mainly “exist to promote or represent the religion or to explain the doctrines of the religion.”

AAI Denounces Pakistani Sentencing of "Blasphemer"
Written by AAI Publicity
Wednesday, 27 January 2010

AAI notes the blatant denial of human rights exercised by the Pakistani government last week as a Pakistani court sentenced a young Pakistani shopkeeper to a life term in prison and fined more than $1,000 last week for desecrating the Quran.

According to Pakistan’s National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP), 22-year-old Imran Masih of the Faisalabad suburb of Hajvairy was convicted of desecrating the Quran per Section 295-B of Pakistan’s legal code and thereby "outraging religious feelings" (Section 295-A) on Jan. 11. Even more disturbing, the conviction was based on the accusation of a rival shopkeeper who, as part of an Islamic extremist proselytizing group, allegedly used a mosque loudspeaker system to incite a mob that beat Masih and ransacked his shop.

"Irish legislators and citizens should take note of how blasphemy laws are used in other countries to justify blood feuds and petty disagreements," said AAI president Stuart Bechman.  "It is outrageous enough for a government to base a life sentence solely on the eyewitness account of a witness with clear prejudice against the defendent.  It is even more outrageous that any court would throw away a person's entire life based merely on the destruction of a few pages of a book."

"Blasphemy laws are hate crimes against the vulnerable and truly represent one of the most heinous legacies of our religious heritage.  Any government that passes and upholds such laws should be considered a rogue nation and boycotted by the world community."

AAI Expresses Sympathy Over Haitian Earthquake Disaster
Written by AAI President
Thursday, 14 January 2010

On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the impoverished nation of Haiti less than 20 miles from the nation's capital.  The disaster, combined with Haiti's high population density, crumbling architecture, and widespread poverty, has created a tragedy in which death tolls may top 100,000.  Over three million people have been affected by the quake.  The infrastructure of the area has been devastated, and many skilled workers (including health care providers) who could help with recovery are missing or dead.  Haiti is in urgent need of assistance in this crisis.

Many of us want to reach out to help those who are suffering in the wake of this disaster.  But as secularists, we are wary of those organizations that would include proselytization in their relief efforts.  Here is a list of US organizations that have ramped up to contribute to the recovery effort.

The American Humanist Association, one of AAI's partners in the Secular Coalition for America (SCA),  is coordinating efforts through its Humanist Charities program. You can provide donations through its Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund to support the relief efforts going on right now.

The Center for Inquiry, another Secular Coalition for America partner,  is also providing relief efforts through its S.H.A.R.E. program.  They are sending 100% of all donations collected through S.H.A.R.E. to Doctors Without Borders.  You can donate to S.H.A.R.E. directly by clicking here.

In addition, the Foundation Beyond Belief has recommended several organizations that have received high ratings from Charity Navigator and take a secular approach to their charitable work.  Foundation Beyond Belief writes: "MADRE is a small organization with a high efficiency rating and a good track record in disaster relief that does not mix worldview with its charity. ActionAid International is an outstanding organization that is efficient, non-sectarian, and works with a small budget. International Relief Teams, AmeriCares, Doctors Without Borders, and Partners In Health all receive high ratings for the secular charitable work they do."

Donations to the above US organizations qualify as a tax-deductible contribution under US tax law.

We encourage those who can to contribute to the relief effort.  Please feel free to share this information with your local groups, friends and family, in order to demonstrate our humanistic generosity in a time of great need.
