Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe
by Greg Epstein
In Good Without God, Greg Epstein presents another, more balanced and inclusive response: Humanism. With a focus on the positive, he highlights humanity's potential for goodness and the ways in which Humanists lead lives of purpose and compassion. Humanism can offer the sense of community we want and often need in good times and bad, as we celebrate marriages and the birth of our children, and as we care for those who are elderly or sick. In short, Humanism teaches us that we can lead good and moral lives without supernaturalism, without higher powers . . . without God.

The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason
by Victor J. Stenger
In this new book, Victor J. Stenger, whose God: The Failed Hypothesis was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007, reviews and expands upon the principles of New Atheism and answers many of its critics. He demonstrates in detail that naturalism--the view that all of reality is reducible to matter and nothing else--is sufficient to explain everything we observe in the universe, from the most distant galaxies to the inner workings of the brain that result in the phenomenon of mind.

The Republic of Ireland's new blasphemy law - a law which punishes criticism or mockery of any religious faith or belief with a fine of up to €25,000 - becomes operational as of January 1, 2010. The new law defines blasphemy as publishing or uttering matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby intentionally causing outrage among a substantial number of adherents of that religion. Atheist Ireland is challenging the law with its own publication of 25 blasphemous quotations gathered from famous historical figures, including founders and leaders of the major religious faiths. |

Lawsuit threatened over atheist councilman in North Carolina |

RALEIGH, N.C. — Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell believes in ending the death penalty, conserving water and reforming government — but he doesn't believe in God. His political opponents say that's a sin that makes him unworthy of serving in office, and they've got the North Carolina Constitution on their side. Bothwell's detractors are threatening to take the city to court for swearing him in, even though the state's antiquated requirement that officeholders believe in God is unenforceable because it violates the U.S. Consititution. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jmS49f5wC7XKFjiS8tDTo3wv67hgD9CHCN2O0 |

Atheist Alliance International denounces the unprecedented and exclusive access granted to members of the US Catholic Church in shaping the final form of the health care reform bill recently passed by the US House of Representatives, as disclosed in US media reports. The Associated Press reported on November 11 that "Representatives for the [Catholic] bishops were in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Capitol suite negotiating with top officials last Friday evening as they reached final terms of the agreement". It further added that "Earlier in the day, [Speaker of the House] Pelosi, a Catholic and an abortion rights supporter, had been on the phone to Rome with Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Washington's former archbishop, on the subject" AAI asks, how is this not a blatant violation of the First Amendment? How does inviting religious leaders into a bill drafting session and teleconferring with religious leaders (ESPECIALLY foreign ones!) "pass no bill respecting an establishment of religion"?? |
