Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe
by Greg Epstein
Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe In Good Without God, Greg Epstein presents another, more balanced and inclusive response: Humanism. With a focus on the positive, he highlights humanity's potential for goodness and the ways in which Humanists lead lives of purpose and compassion. Humanism can offer the sense of community we want and often need in good times and bad, as we celebrate marriages and the birth of our children, and as we care for those who are elderly or sick. In short, Humanism teaches us that we can lead good and moral lives without supernaturalism, without higher powers . . . without God.

The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason
by Victor J. Stenger
The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason In this new book, Victor J. Stenger, whose God: The Failed Hypothesis was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007, reviews and expands upon the principles of New Atheism and answers many of its critics. He demonstrates in detail that naturalism--the view that all of reality is reducible to matter and nothing else--is sufficient to explain everything we observe in the universe, from the most distant galaxies to the inner workings of the brain that result in the phenomenon of mind.

AAI Calls for Evidence-Based Health Care in US
Written by AAI Publicity
Tuesday, 10 November 2009

AAI calls on the US Congress to end its longstanding and dubious practice of reimbursing religious individuals and groups for practicing "spiritual care" in the current debate on health care reform.

Taxpayer reimbursement of "spiritual care" practiced by religious groups who renounce illness and medicine and claim that illnesses are caused by sin, such as Christian Science, have been included in the US health care program for the elderly, Medicare, since its inception.  Spiritual care consists of religious volunteers praying, either in-person or remotely, for the ill person to recover through their belief in the existence of (a) god.

AAI sees such faith-based practices as fraudulent and a means to funnel tax dollars to religious groups in direct contravention to the US First Amendment of separation of state and church.

Iran Prepares to Execute Islamic "Apostates"
Written by AAI Publicity
Tuesday, 10 November 2009

Amnesty International reports that 3 Kurdish nationals in Iranian custody are scheduled to be executed for "enmity against God" (apostasy, or denying the truth of Islam):

http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/MDE13/102/2009/en/a4056737-ef5d-4af2-aebb-fc85c489e11b/mde131022009en.html

The date of execution has been moved up since this Amnesty report was written. Ehsan Fattahian is scheduled for execution on Wednesday, November 11. Other colleagues of Fattahian are expected to be executed in the following days.

According to Mina Ahadi, Chair of the Central Council of ex-Muslims, and Michael Schmidt-Salomon, Chair of the Giordano Bruno Foundation, both in Germany, Fattahian is accused of “apostasy” among other charges. Capital punishment for apostasy, or in any way making it a crime to leave a religion, contravenes Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Dr. Schmidt-Salomon pointed out that “the German Government has supported several people who converted from Islam to Christianity. It is now time that it also supports apostates who became free of all religion!”

AAI calls on those who care about religious liberty and human rights to write to your own government to protest this planned execution as well as to the Iranian government. Information on this case and whom to write to can be found on the Amnesty International website at: http://bit.ly/njZS3

The attack in Calabar and the threat of religious extremism in Nigeria
Written by Leo Igwe
Thursday, 20 August 2009

Around 11:30 am on Wednesday July 29 2009, a mob of about 200 persons from the Liberty Gospel Church invaded the Cultural Center in Calabar Cross River State, Nigeria.  The Cultural Center was the venue of a public symposium on witchcraft and child rights organised by the Nigerian Humanist Movement and Stepping Stones Nigeria.

Most of them arrived at the venue in buses wearing orange T-shirt while others donned plain clothes to hide their identity. As we were about to start, some of them stormed the conference hall stamping their feet on the ground and chanting slogans critical of the event and the organisers.
