Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe
by Greg Epstein
Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe In Good Without God, Greg Epstein presents another, more balanced and inclusive response: Humanism. With a focus on the positive, he highlights humanity's potential for goodness and the ways in which Humanists lead lives of purpose and compassion. Humanism can offer the sense of community we want and often need in good times and bad, as we celebrate marriages and the birth of our children, and as we care for those who are elderly or sick. In short, Humanism teaches us that we can lead good and moral lives without supernaturalism, without higher powers . . . without God.

The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason
by Victor J. Stenger
The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason In this new book, Victor J. Stenger, whose God: The Failed Hypothesis was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007, reviews and expands upon the principles of New Atheism and answers many of its critics. He demonstrates in detail that naturalism--the view that all of reality is reducible to matter and nothing else--is sufficient to explain everything we observe in the universe, from the most distant galaxies to the inner workings of the brain that result in the phenomenon of mind.

AAI Affiliate Nigerian Human Movement Confronts Witch-Belief in Nigeria
Written by AAI Affiliate
Sunday, 19 July 2009

In the past ten years, thousands of children alleged to be witches and wizards have been tortured, thrown out, abandoned or killed by their family members in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States (Nigeria).  This month, AAI affiliate Nigerian Humanist Movement and a UK based non governmental organisation, the Stepping Stones Nigeria are organizing a symposium on witchcraft. The aim of the program is to highlight the abuses of child rights that take place in Nigeria due to this traditional belief. The event is part of wider efforts being made by both organisations to combat the persecution of children in the name of witchcraft.

Irish Gov Pursues Protection of Ideologies Over People
Written by AAI Publicity
Thursday, 16 July 2009

The Irish parliament has passed a law imposing a 25,000 Euro fine for the crime of blasphemy.

There are conflicting accounts of the final vote centering on the absence of two lawmakers; but the government had been backing the measure, while the Atheists, Freethinkers and secularists there waged a vigorous campaign to defeat the intrusive measure.

Ironically, there are blasphemy statues already on the books and ensconced in the Irish Constitution; the new legislation actually reduces the punishment for this "crime."
