Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe
by Greg Epstein
Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe In Good Without God, Greg Epstein presents another, more balanced and inclusive response: Humanism. With a focus on the positive, he highlights humanity's potential for goodness and the ways in which Humanists lead lives of purpose and compassion. Humanism can offer the sense of community we want and often need in good times and bad, as we celebrate marriages and the birth of our children, and as we care for those who are elderly or sick. In short, Humanism teaches us that we can lead good and moral lives without supernaturalism, without higher powers . . . without God.

The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason
by Victor J. Stenger
The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason In this new book, Victor J. Stenger, whose God: The Failed Hypothesis was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007, reviews and expands upon the principles of New Atheism and answers many of its critics. He demonstrates in detail that naturalism--the view that all of reality is reducible to matter and nothing else--is sufficient to explain everything we observe in the universe, from the most distant galaxies to the inner workings of the brain that result in the phenomenon of mind.

Ugandan Government Leader Exposes Agenda of Religious Bigotry
Written by AAI Publicity
Thursday, 04 June 2009

Speaking from ignorance, bigotry, and hate, with an apparent lust for war and violence, Dr. Buturo would seem the last person one would expect in an office titled “Minister of Ethics and Integrity.”

In an article published on June 1, 2009 in the New Vision, Ugandan Minister of Ethics and Integrity Dr. James Nsaba Buturo lay the failings he saw in Ugandan society squarely on the shoulders of "anti-god secularists."  Such failings included "withcraft, homosexuality, stealing of public resources, marital infidelity and human sacrifice."

In so doing, Dr. Buturo seems to expose more of his own moral failings than anything that secularists actually care about.  He seems to think that homosexuality, stealing of public resources, and marital infidelity are not only signs of “moral corruption,” but do not occur religious communities.  It is also difficult to believe that Dr. Buturo, an allegedly educated person, would not realize that human sacrifice and witchcraft are exclusively religious practices that all secularists would oppose.

Another Loss at the Hand of Religion
Written by AAI President
Wednesday, 03 June 2009

AAI is deeply saddened by the murder of Kansas physician George Tiller and wish to convey our utmost condolences to Dr. Tiller's family, patients, and friends during this time of unimaginable loss.

Dr. Tiller's courage to serve vulnerable human beings against religious dogma and intolerance should not be forgotten. He was a hero to those seeking help in the most desperate of situations, and we honor the compassionate care he provided to so many.

Oklahoma to Display 10 Commandments at State Capitol
Written by Alonzo Fyfe
Friday, 22 May 2009

There is a particular irony in proposals such as that recently passed in Oklahoma to display a 10 Commandments monument on capital grounds.  (See: The Oklahoman: Oklahoma state Capitol to display Ten Commandments)

Even though the monument declares that one should not bear false witness, and its proponents claim that it is important to teach this moral value to children, the plan itself is built on a foundation of lies, half-truth, and distortions.

US Military Proselytizes in Afghanistan
Written by AAI Publicity
Monday, 04 May 2009

US soldiers have been encouraged to spread the message of their Christian faith among Afghanistan's predominantly Muslim population, video footage obtained by Al Jazeera appears to show.

Military chaplains stationed in the US air base at Bagram were also filmed with bibles printed in the country's main Pashto and Dari languages.

In one recorded sermon, Lieutenant-Colonel Gary Hensley, the chief of the US military chaplains in Afghanistan, is seen telling soldiers that as followers of Jesus Christ, they all have a responsibility "to be witnesses for him".

“Nones” Most Likely to Oppose Torture, US Pew Survey Says

Positive correlation found between religious piety and support for torture

The US Pew Research Center for the People and the Press released results of its most recent survey on US public support for torture this week.  Conducted the week of April 14-21, this survey confirmed a similar study by Pew conducted in 2008.

US white evangelical protestants (61%) and white non-hispanic Catholics (51%), the categories with the highest levels of support, believed torture was often or sometimes justified, whereas only 46% of white mainline protestants and 40% of unaffiliated / nones believed so.  Among those who felt that torture was rarely or never justifiable, 55% of unaffiliated / nones held this view, whereas 53% of mainline protestants, 47% of white non-hispanic Catholics, and only 33% of white evangelical protestants agreed.

These proportions also correlated with frequency of US church attendance: 54% of those who attended church weekly believed torture was often or sometimes justified as did 51% of those who attended infrequently.  Only 42% of those who rarely or never attended church felt that torture was often or sometimes justified.
