Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe
by Greg Epstein
In Good Without God, Greg Epstein presents another, more balanced and inclusive response: Humanism. With a focus on the positive, he highlights humanity's potential for goodness and the ways in which Humanists lead lives of purpose and compassion. Humanism can offer the sense of community we want and often need in good times and bad, as we celebrate marriages and the birth of our children, and as we care for those who are elderly or sick. In short, Humanism teaches us that we can lead good and moral lives without supernaturalism, without higher powers . . . without God.

The New Atheism: Taking a Stand for Science and Reason
by Victor J. Stenger
In this new book, Victor J. Stenger, whose God: The Failed Hypothesis was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2007, reviews and expands upon the principles of New Atheism and answers many of its critics. He demonstrates in detail that naturalism--the view that all of reality is reducible to matter and nothing else--is sufficient to explain everything we observe in the universe, from the most distant galaxies to the inner workings of the brain that result in the phenomenon of mind.

The Atheist Alliance International continued to express significant concern at the makeup of the Advisory Council of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. The final appointments to the Council were announced today by the White House. Among the last two appointments announced were a conservative Pnetacostal preacher who denounced abortion rights at the Democratic National Convention and a director of the Human Rights Council, an advocacy group for the gay community. This followed a longstanding trend by the White House to announce council appointsments in pairs, usually a conservative Christian Right leader with a leader from the gay community. |

Atheist Alliance International praises theTexas Board of Education to fighting off Religious Right attempt to undermine the teaching of evolution, but concerned about alternative wording adopted. In a March 27 article, the New York Times reported, "In an evenly split vote, the [Texas] State Board of Education on Thursday upheld teaching evolution as accepted mainstream science." Still, "social conservatives on the board, using a series of amendments tailored to particular school subjects, succeeded in requiring teachers to evaluate critically a variety of scientific principles like cell formation and the Big Bang." |
