Rahaf al-Qunun

Happy New Year and best wishes to our all followers.  What better way to start off the year than to celebrate that another atheist was able to flee Saudi Arabia.  Welcome to Canada Rahaf al-Qunun. As a Canadian citizen, I’m proud to have you here and all of us at Atheist Alliance International want to help you in any way we can with your new life. This is welcome news for us at AAI.  Last fall, we...

We do care

The shooting of 11 people last week at a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh was a tragedy. All of us at Atheist Alliance International extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and community of those killed. Some might think that because it involved those who were practising their religion that we atheists, may not care about it as much as other shootings. That could not be further from the...

Welcome Nigerian atheists!

There is a short list of countries in the developing world that continue to have strong secular movements creating awareness of atheism. Guatemala and Uganda are two countries where groups are always moving forward. Guatemala Humanistas conducted a billboard campaign a year ago to assure people it was alright if they did not believe in a God. Uganda has a growing number of secular schools and HALE...

Election of Pedro Sanchez

Congratulations to the new President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez. He openly declares himself an atheist and was sworn into office without a bible or crucifix. The media covered the event with no apparent backlash for the lack of religion at the ceremony. In another radical departure, he announced his cabinet would comprise 11 women and six men, giving women almost a two thirds majority—which is unprec...

Recent elections in Costa Rica

Congratulations to the people of Costa Rica in choosing Carlos Alvarado Quesada as the President Elect of their country.  In doing so, they chose tolerance over religious dogma. The main issue of the campaign was same sex marriage. Quesada’s opponent was an conservative, evangelical pastor who is against same sex marriage along with abortion and sex education.  Quesada campaigned for same sex marr...

Lawrence Krauss

The allegations of sexual misconduct against Lawrence Krauss are very troubling. He is a celebrated Atheist and people seem to be lining up to back him or condemn him. As atheists, we must follow our principles of using facts, reason and evidence to determine our views. To defend someone simply because of his popularity in our community, or because you are a fan, is not right. These are serious al...

Stephen Hawking

All of us at Atheist Alliance International are saddened by the death of Stephen Hawking. The atheist community was very fortunate to have someone as intelligent, original and humorous as Stephen. His work on the origins of the universe and black holes broadened our understanding of a universe without a creator. His efforts to bring science to a wider audience enriched us all. Stephen encouraged u...

Icelandic circumcision ban

Icelandic Progressive Party MP, Silja Dögg Gunnarsdóttir is the driving force behind a Bill put before The Alþingi (the Icelandic Parliament) that proposes a six-year prison term for anyone found guilty of “removing sexual organs in whole or in part”. Iceland banned circumcising girls in 2015 but this Bill extends the ban to boys. Ms Gunnarsdóttir said, “Every individual, it doesn’t matter what se...
