The shooting of 11 people last week at a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh was a tragedy. All of us at Atheist Alliance International extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and community of those killed.
Some might think that because it involved those who were practising their religion that we atheists, may not care about it as much as other shootings. That could not be further from the truth. We value life and human rights. People should be free to practise their religion and also be free to have no religion without fearing for their lives.
We also deplore hate crimes. Atheists value tolerance, rationality and open discussion. We want a world where this is practised; not one where people are killed because of bizarre fears that are completely groundless. All of us must work together to stop these heinous actions regardless of our non-beliefs or beliefs.
