Four responses to Biblical slavery

Four responses to Biblical slavery

You know slavery is profoundly wrong and you believe God is the only source of objective morality.

You discover that God in the Bible permits holding slaves. He permits you to buy and sell slaves, to capture them, to brand them and beat them. Because slaves are your property, you can even beat them so brutally that they die, and you can pass them on to your children when you die. God thinks all this is moral but you think it is not.

When you discover this do you:

  1. Realize that God is not the source of objective morality and that God simply reflects the outdated morality of the men who wrote the Bible?
  2. Know God cannot have said these things and resolve to keep reading the Bible verses until you understand how to interpret them correctly?
  3. Assume the person who pointed this out to you is an agent of Satan and can be safely ignored?
  4. Realize there is nothing wrong with slavery and rush out to capture a slave of your own?

Four responses, but only one makes senseā€¦
